  1. It is all about conformation and size. The more muscle the better, the smaller the bone the better, it is unhealthy for the horse but it is today's standard. Go to J and J stables web page to see Classic Link, he was placed 1st by all 5 judges at the paint world show.

A good hair coat is a must, supplements and lots of currying. Baths should be few and far between because you want all the oil to stay in the hair. Get a neck sweat, work the horse to a lather in it, cool him down and tie him in a stall with it on, you should use some creams to help induce sweating. Trotting will trim up the bottom line and cantering will work the back. Do not ride if you plan to seriously show halter, pony form another horse or cart. The mane should be done like you would in a western pleasure class, a thicker neck = longer mane and vice versa. A thick mane requires more bands up to 100 sometimes and a thin mane needs less to look thicker. Make sure you have a farrier that specializes in halter shoeing, they can make the horses legs look straighter by the way they shoe the horse.

Halter horses are generally not the healthiest animals, and are very specialize feed converters. To bulk a horse up they need to be fed 4-6 times a day as much feed as they can clean up in 20 minutes. They should have as much alfalfa as they can eat. Supplements for joint, hoof and coat health are generally a must. Bulking supplements, similar to the one's body builders use are usually required for non N/H or H/H horses to be competitive.

How is your horse bred? This will have a lot to do with his success in the pen.

There is more to showing a halter horse than many think. The basics they need to know - walk, jog, stop and back in time with the handler. You should stand right at the throat latch and use very little pressure on the halter to direct the horse. Your hand tilting forward should be enough to tell the horse to walk or jog from the walk. Halter horses need to be trained to stand square and prick their ears forward. THe good thing is in halter, unlike showmanship you can touch the horse and use a peppermint wrapper or something to keep their attention forward. Hope this helps,

  2. you have to have your horses shots(rabies, coggins) before showing get in the right class group like if your horse is a gelding it would be in class 4yr and up gelding then when its your turn to go into the ring you go upto the judge and he/she tells when to go you have to trot your horse to the line up and stand perfectly front feet horizontal and back feet vertical from front feet and stand like that until judge gets to you and then (horse standing perfectly) you face the judge the whole time shes at your horse then she picks a group of horses and you go line up again and she picks the places

    hope this helped :)

  3. Here are some links about halter classes! I show my AQHA 15.2hh Palomino Gelding Halter also! It is SO fun!!

In halter its mainly about the horses confirmation. They have different halter classes: Mare Halter, Gelding, Stud, Color etc. Normally there isn't really a pattern. You walk into the ring and walk up to your judge (remember to smile :) ) and when your judge steps out of your way, you get your horse to jog (trot) until you get to your place in the line of horses being shown. Then you set your horse up. Meaning they stand with their feet perfectly squared.

So for your horse, you'd enter him in gelding halter classes.

I use a leather halter and lead (lead has a chain), with some silver on both and some little jewels on the halter also. with the chain, you run through the left side of the nose ring of the halter, under the horses chin, through the nose ring on the right and up the halter to the secong ring and clip it. It helps you have more control of your horses head.

  4. I would suggest that you attend a horse show that includes halter classes, that way you will know what it's all about.  There is absolutely no way that anyone can give you suggestions, tips, information that will even make sense to you unless you have watched some halter classes.  There are so many aspects to every class involving any animal that one cannot just sit at a computer and prepare someone else when the slate is clean to begin with, I would love to help you, but like I said, even if you sat down and read the rules straight from the rule book, it wouldn't make sense to you unless you personally watched a few classes.
