Question:

Shrimp allergy?

I wanted to see if my son would like shrimp...we eat alot of shrimp here. So I bought him some frozen breaded ones. Well I microwaved one first, cut it open and rubbed the shrimp on his back and arm. I "heard" thats a safe way to see if there is any allergy to it. And about a minute later the spot where I rubbed it turned red and little bumps came up. Its not swollen and really not too bad at all. But I am worried about it. Is that a sign he could be allergic?

He is 19 months old.

  1. sounds like he could have had an allergic reaction to the shrimp.. if anything i would just refrain from giving that to your son.

  2. Not suppose to introduce any kind of seafood until they are apprx. 5 years old.....Body has to be able to fight it off if allergic....never heard of the skin thing....rub on tongue and see if you see bumps...

  3. Sure. But get him tested.

Kids under the age of two are not supposed to have shellfish, peanuts, treenuts, honey, or eggs.

  4. Yeah-I would certainly think so.

Your not supposed to even try any seafood or peanut butter till the child is 3 years old.

  5. I would have him allergy tested before giving it to him. It's really scary when they have an allergic reaction and can't breathe. Better not to take the chance.

  6. Yup, that's how doctors test for food allergies, they rub small samples of the food on the back and look for a skin reaction. Take him to the doctor to make sure but yes, it sounds like an allergy.
