  1. You need to get a book on it and someone that is more of an expert on this.  I think you can also grow your own so you know that it's not going to kill you.  Be careful of trying to find it on your own.  I would have someone go with you that knows what they are doing.

  2. There's no single rule to tell between psychedelic, poisonous, or edible.  You should read up on the subject thoroughly before you attempt to go hunting.

One important sign is the presence of blueing on the stem where it has been handled.  If this bluing is not present, then the mushroom is not psychoactive.  BUT, not all mushrooms that bruise blue are psychoactive.

I assume you are hunting for psilocybe cubenesis?  If this is the case, you want to look in cow pastures after a heavy rain.  Cubenesis will grow directly from older cow pies.  Cubenesis have white stems with caps varying in color from white to tan.  The caps are usually darker in the center than the edges.

To be positive you have the right mushroom, you MUST take a spore print.  place a cap on a piece of white paper and cover with a glass.  Come back in 8-12 hours.  There should be a dark purple print on the paper (NOT brown or black).

Remember- when in doubt, throw it out.
