Shuai Peng and Julia Goerges manage upsets at the 2011 Family Circle Cup third round
Shuai Peng upsets Nadia Petrova in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-2
Chinese tennis pro Shuai Peng managed to defeat seventh seed Nadia Petrova in three lopsided sets during their third round match at Charleston, prevailing over her opponent with a winning scoreline of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. The eleventh seed took just a little over
two hours and thirty minutes to send her Russian opponent packing.
Shuai Peng is currently ranked World Number 30, and has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association for several years now. At 25 years old, she is yet to win a career title but features some impressive wins on her tennis resume. Petrova, on the other hand,
is 28 years old and has been a regular fixture in the WTA rankings for almost ten years. She joined the tour in 1999, and is ranked World Number 22 at the moment. She has had quite a successful run so far, and already has 9 WTA career titles under her belt.
The two players competed in an intense match in the third round of the tournament, with Peng scoring three aces and double faulting only twice in three sets. She also broke Petrova eight times, although the Russian had her revenge by converting five of sixteen
break points successfully. However, she could not muster the effort required to defeat Peng and lost the match as the Chinese pro took 53 per cent of the total points to bring their head to head record to 3-2 in Peng’s advantage.
Shuai Peng will now take on Indian tennis player and qualifier Sania Mirza in the quarterfinals of the tournament, after she ousted wildcard Sabine Lisicki in straight sets in the third round.
Julia Goerges dismisses Shahar Peer in easy straights 6-2, 6-3
German tennis pro Julia Goerges also secured a place for herself in the 2011 Family Circle Cup quarterfinals after ousting Shahar Peer in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. The twelfth recorded one of many high-profile wins with her defeat of the fifth seed Israeli,
who seemed badly out of shape during this match.
Goerges is ranked much lower than World Number 11 Shahar Peer, at World Number 35, and her win came as a surprise to many spectators. She is 22 years old, and has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association for almost six years. During this time, the player
has won a single WTA career title. 23-year-old Peer, on the other hand, has been on tour for seven years and has won five career titles during this time.
The only explanation for the fifth seed’s abysmal third seed showing is the fact that Goerges was an unknown force for her, and the German tends to decimate her rivals in competition. She won the match by taking 57 per cent of the total points, double faulting
just once and breaking Peer five times in the process.
Goerges will take on Russia’s Elena Vesnina in the quarterfinals of the Charleston tournament today.
