Shuai Peng wins over Elena Baltacha to progress to the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number twenty, Shuai Peng of China crushed Elena Baltacha 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 to move swiftly into round three at the Wimbledon Championships 2011 on Friday.
It was a thwarting display of tennis from Peng, allowing a player, 48 places below her in the rankings to dictate the play. Peng was particularly defeated early on before coming to life in the latter stages of the match, dumping
a weak backhand and allowing Baltacha to clinch the opener in just 41 minutes.
But she made no mistake in the remaining sets, creating more and more chances and taking the second set in just 33 minutes. Although Baltacha continued to trade blows with her more brilliant opponent in the second set, she failed
to capitalise on the opportunities, she created as Peng hung in there despite playing below her best.
Baltacha was not done, though, and she hit back quickly, taking the score to 2-2. Both Women had their chances but it was the Chinese No.2, who found the breakthrough she had been looking for.
With the score tied at one set apiece, the Brit No.1 immediately responded by breaking at the start of the third set to establish a 2-0 lead in the decider. And she continued her barrage as Peng faltered once more on serve, allowing
Baltacha to go 5-5. But continuing to convince herself to get over the worst, she upped the level of her game and with a succession of jaw-dropping shots from her two-handed wings, she raced towards a thumping victory in just 67 minutes.
By virtue of her three sets victory over the Brit, the Chinese No.2 now marches on into the third round of Wimbledon Championships, where she will meet Melinda Czink, whose protected ranking got her into the Wimbledon Championships
2011.
The Chinese woman is no stranger to success at the Wimbledon Championships, having a 5/10 win-loss mark at the tournament as opposed to Czink’s horrifying 0/7.
The Hungarian was once ranked as high as 37 in 2009, but since then, her fortune has gone in opposite direction, missing a lot of matches due to a number of injuries and struggling down at No. 262 in the world.
Czink is no doubt a talented player, however, even a healthy Czink would have problems with Peng right now, so count on the No. 20 seed cruising in straights.
