Shubhkamna Champions – Gaganjeet Bhullar takes fourth position after round one
Gaganjeet Bhullar carded a five-under par 67, in round one of the inaugural edition of the Shubhkamna Champions golf tournament, to take the fourth position on the leaderboard, on Friday, December 21, 2012.
The tournament is being staged at the Noida Golf Club, and the two-time Asian Tour Order of Merit winner Jeev Milkha Singh is the host of the event.
The tournament is featuring a total of 30 players, including 20 PGTI winners from the 2012 golf season and 10 International tour members, vying for a share of INR6 million prize fund.
Bhullar, who is playing at the Noida Golf Club after six years, turned in 35 on the front nine of the course. Thereafter, he picked up pace and added another five shots to his scorecard, while conceding a double bogey.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled three strokes behind the pace set by Daniel Chopra, who fired an eight-under par 64 to take a two stroke lead over Ajeetesh Sandhu and Anura Rohana.
Bhullar, who is widely tipped as the next Jeev Milkha Singh, expressed his pleasure in posting a decent score, despite getting off to a slow start on the front nine of the course.
"I had a slow start, one-under for front nine. Then I picked up four birdies on back nine I gave a double bogey. I went into the trap and then I three-putted for a double bogey. But then I had a fine 15-footer for birdie to close at five-under,” said the
inform Indian, who recorded two Asian Tour victories during his 2012 Asian Tour campaign.
Talking about the venue course, he said that the layout was completely changed, compared to his last visit six years ago.
According to him, it was difficult to hit the fairways on regular basis. He also said that the key to success was playing well on the greens.
"The last time I played here was six years. I was an amateur and I can't remember how I did but the course has changed a lot. Here we need to find fairways, though it is a short course and you need to putt well," he said.
