Question:

Shut off Water, Missing Gas?

we shut off our water 3 days ago to deal with a leak under our sink. now the gas stove won't work. as far as i know there's no gas going to the oven but the electric spark to light it still works. I've also tried to light the Pilot Light in our Water Boiler but with not luck. It seems there's no gas going though also.

Is there a gas switch or valve i should turn on in my house?

  1. one last option not mentioned here.

while turning off your water, "IF" the gas meter was close by, it may have had an "earthquake valve" on it which could have gotten hit and closed by accident.

earthquake valves are generally installed on later model houses.

  2. The most obvious question:  Did you pay your gas bill?  If you did, and you are certain, that you should have gas, call your gas provider, and ask them if there has been any outages in your area.  Sometimes, problems in the service mains supplying the entire area, are turned off, in areas of construction, or a break in the mainline.  If neither of your appliances has gas, then it is most likely a service problem.  Even if it is not, your gas provider will be glad to check for you.

  3. The main valve is at the gas meter - make sure it's turned on.

If you haven't used your gas lines in awhile, they'll have air in them which takes a little time to bleed off before anything will light - be patient.

  4. It sounds like you turned off the main valve to your gas tank by accident while you were trying to turn off your water. Or you are out of gas completely. Check the tank first. Then follow the lines to your hot water and stove and make sure all the valves are open. Then check and see if you can light your stove and pilot. You are working with gas, so be careful. You can also call your gas company to come out and check it.
