Question:

Shuttle services for the elderly?

My 86-year-old grandmother got into a car accident last night that was her fault. She tried to drive her car when the sun was going down, and she ended up slamming into one of her neighbor's front lawn trees.

Her eyesight and hearing have deteriorated over the years, and it is obvious that this is why the accident has happened.

My family has determined that it is dangerous for her to still be driving, but our schedules don't allow us to take her where she needs to go, and WHEN she needs to get her destination.

Are there any shuttle services in the LA area that can pick her up and drop her off at places like the doctor's office, the grocery store, the bank, etc?

Taking the bus is NOT a favorable option (if you live in the LA area, you'll know why I'm saying this). And taking a taxi is too expensive.

Please help!

I love my Gramma soooo much. I just want her to be safe.

  1. I feel you.

I would NOT suggest DIAL-A-RIDE, they really succ and would have her waiting all d**n day. Ensure her safety by checking in with her several times a day (if you can). See if you can volunteer one of your less busy friends or realitives to cart her around to important things, like docs appts and medicine runs. I know you are probly worried, but keep her in your prayers, things will work out. GL

  2. I used to live in Denver, the public bus had a program for the elderly and handicapped. It allowed for them to call the day before and schedule a pick-up/drop-off on a special bus. You might want to contact your local bus to see if there is anything similar to that. You might also be able to look into carpooling for a smaller fee, if that's something you think might apply to this situation. If all else fails, I would suggest getting her a computer and teaching her to take care of business online, including banking and shopping. Hope this helps and good luck.

  3. Yes, the people in charge of metro have shuttles to accomodate Americans with Disablities Act.  They do require that they live within a 3/4 mile area of the nearest bus stop, or you're out of luck like I am.

  4. she could apply for LADOT cityride services  if she gets medicare/medi-cal  you can get a book of 78 taxi scrip for 6.42 each quarter each scrip is worth $1.00 of taxi fare

the scrip can also be used on LADOT dial a ride services as well

then she could also apply for Access services as well

which is like a county ride dial ride service

both accesss service and LADOT dial ride service requried

a 24 hour reservation (you book them day in advance)

also note if she ends getting Asi she can ride the Metro buses

    at no charge as well
