  2. Shyness can be understood as a defense to protect oneself. Inhibitions and fears are caused by bad or negative experiences with people, for example, a really important is one's trust being broken. Certain ideas about what people will be like are already formed inside the head before the shy person interacts, and that effects the interaction as distant, delayed or full of doubt. Or it may be that the person is just bored and uninterested. Whatever it is, there's no need to break away from it. Its not a disease to come out of. Just give the shy person more time and patience. Be friendly and honest. And shy persons themselves should take their own time. If they feel shyness is an obstruction, then one can start by eliminating the doubts. Pose them as questions to oneself and see if they are really true.

  3. I think it is more of a fear issue. Nature throws out various types people/creatures in order that at least some survive the big bad world. Some have inborn courage and others fear. I can tell you from watching the cat world the ones that fear can last longer than the bold ones.  Realize that you are a survivalist and be proud.  Some times will be tough but you can win in the end if you get real flexible in your thinking.

  4. Some I feel are naturally private & prefer not to socialise.

Mostly I guess is a confidence issue where striking a conversation with a stranger can prove to be intimidating.

There're lots of reasons which causes an individual into withdrawal such as previous rejection from a loved one which probably left them bitter on relationship(s).

To break away from that (shyness) takes practise - lots of it.

Just basically taking small steps in coming out of their "shell".
