  1. They are best kept with similar delicate fish, (gouramis), bottom dwellers, (corydoras, loaches, plecs etc) or even on their own. Most other fish such as neons, barbs, cichilids etc, will nip and bite their finnage, causing open wounds and sores. Also, try to keep males away from females as they will permanently pester them to mate, causing stress related illnesses.

  2. They should really be kept in an aquarium designed specifically for them. An ideal environment would be a small aquarium (45cm+) with dense planting and a few very peaceful tank mates such as small catfish and rasboras. In this environment the siamese fighter will feel quite at home and will become an active, interesting individual which can be appreciated beyond its stunning colour and form.

Do not mix them with fish that nibble fins. Only one male to a tank.

  3. as long as the fish is tropical and does not have long flowing fins(like a betta) and is not aggressive then they should be fine. the reason is because Betta's have bad eyesight and if any fish looks like them they will attack it.

  4. Most fish should be ok. Betta only really are not good with each other but have no problems with other fish like platys, tetras and other small fish.

  5. I have had a beta in the same tank as many other fish and it did just fine.  You just can't put two betas in the same tank. They will fight until one of them dies.

  6. Great tankmates for the betta splendens (siamese fighter fish) would be Platies, Corydoras catfish, Mollies, Shrimp, Loaches and African Dwarf Frog, basically nothing that looks or resembles another betta and your fine.

EDIT- I saw in one of the answers that someone said Honey Gourami is okay with the male betta, not a good idea, especially if it's a male, all gouramis are a bad idea since they are very territorial (the male gouramis) and resemble too much of the male betta.

  7. Most tropical community fish will go peacefully with a betta. Just stay away from gouramis- they are in the same family, and will often get picked on by the betta. Tetras and barbs would work well, depending on what size tank you have.

  8. other ok fish are

    ok fish are

    neons

    harlequins

    glow light tetras

    gourami honey

do not put any fin nipppers like angel fish

    tiger barbs

    etc

  9. contrary to their name sakes, Betta's are extremely docile and peaceful fish and will go well with any fish provided 2 rules are followed:

    1) They are not and do not look anything like a Betta.  Female Bettas don't mix with a male.  I would be wary of guppies and sword tails, nothing with long flowing fins.

    2) The other fish is not aggressive or a fin nipper.
