Sibu starts work on their first indoor volleyball stadium – Volleyball news
The groundbreaking ceremony of the first indoor volleyball stadium of Sibu took place today at the Rejang Park Housing Estate in Malaysia.
The stadium that is scheduled to be completed by the year 2013 was officiated by Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh as well as Charlie Oropeza. Wong is the Minister of State for Environment and Public Health while Oropeza is the chief executive officer of Prudential
Assurance Malaysia Berhad (PAMB).
The stadium to be constructed will be four storeys high and will feature three volleyball courts. Other than that, it will also have a few fitness gymnasiums. The seating capacity in the auditorium will be 5000.
The country is able to provide itself with this facility with the help of PAMB which is making donations equivalent to half the construction cost of the stadium. The stadium that will be constructed based on international standards is estimated to take RM6
million for completion.
Wong acknowledged the efforts that Prudential is making by mentioning that the people of the town would benefit from the corporate social responsibility displayed. In doing so, Wong also made announced a grant worth RM 100,000 which would be made use of
as incentives and rewards for players.
Despite Wong’s insistence, there is a sizeable group of local residents that do not support the construction of the stadium. The site for the construction is a basketball court that is present in a residential area. The locals see the construction as a deprivation
of a recreational facility for basketball players.
David Wong, the assemblyman, made the following statement about the issue at hand, “Nobody will reject the idea of building courts or stadiums aimed to upgrade the standard of the game but other factors must also be taken into account.”
Wong has already received a petition by 150 residents of the area against the construction of the sports facility. Wong has assured the public that the matter will not be taken lightly and will be brought into the notice of the state assembly next week,
when an assembly sitting is planned to take place.
