Sick basset hound?? what do you think??

my basset hound is older; she's almost 12 years of age...but their life expectancy is 15 years...

i dont think shes "dying", but i know shes sick. she isnt walking right and she just mopes around and sleeps a lot. she had fleas pretty bad the other day, and we gave her a good flea bath and she just has laid around since. my cousin's boyfriend (who breeds beagles) said the flea attack may have caused her to lose some blood so she may just need rest; she eats well and has been drinking a lot of water...it just all doesnt make since...i love her so much and would go crazy if anything were to happen to her

what do you guys think is wrong?

  1. A lot of the time when they have been infested with fleas the bath just plain feels good and they can finally rest after the fleas are DEAD!  If she is eating o.k. and looks happy when she is awake, let her rest.  If you are worried about her having a blood loss check out her gums.  If they are pink and moist she is o.k.  If they are white, well, off to the vet for some blood builder and or de wormer.

The part that bothers me is "she isn't walking right."  I would take her in for a check up to be sure.

  2. This could be something to do with the fleas, Take her to the vets for a check up - its could be something internal or something xxxx

  3. A:Get her on flea medicine

B:Possibly look into taking her to the vet to get her checked out.

C:Depending on where you live your puppy may have heat exhaustion and possibly try changing her food/diet that has high protein cause she`s probably anemic. Take a look at her gums if they`re whitish you have definitely got a problem.

  4. Could be kidney probs if this happened after a bath. Please take her to the vet because as she is old  she  may be in pain .Ihope she gets better soon though.

  5. The flea bath could of made her sick. Don't put anything else on her such as flea collar or powder. I made a lab sick with over doing flea products. Try frontline it is more effective and safer. Especially because she is old. Good Luck, oh my lab recovered but keep the bath in mind. Over the counter flea soaps and things are dangerous.

  6. Again, diagnosing on here is dangerous.  This could be a kidney flare up - excessive water drinking could suggest this?  Or again it could be down to a pyo (is she spayed?).  Excessive water drinking could indicate diabetes too.   Not walking right - how is she walking 'not right'?  Bassets do go off their back legs - did you knock her getting in and out the bath for example.  Rick her back?  Flea attack?  Sounds strange that one.  Did the fleas suddenly swoop in and attack her?

Nah, get this elderly lady to your vet.  Don't try to diagnose her yourself.  She needs checking over at this age.  Even if she just gets an MOT so she can move on to spend the remainder of her days without pain.  Good luck
