My female betta is sick... I have no idea what to do. She has clamped fins and just lies in the corner and occasionally comes up for air. She does not have any visible bacteria or fungus infection. I have tried BettaFix, Hikari Betta Revive and gel tek Penicillin (Edible gel). The gel seems to have made her a little bit better, but not much. The Base of her left fin is also a tad bit swollen. Im Going to my LFS tomorrow to look into more meds. (any suggestions)

Thanks for the help.

  1. She might have fin rot.

My fish had this and she laid in the corner on her side for months, and eventually developed swim blader and gill flukes, and eventually died.

  2. Its obvious its either a fin rot or someother fish is in the aquarium which is causeing the beta stress. If there is another fish in the aquarium seperate the beta from the aquarium and you will notice the fins will grow again after a while say couple of days and it will be normal. Also try putting a heater as cold water might make the fish sick.

By the way Inoticed its just 1 gallon tank so it would mean it probably needs more space as water must be getting dirty quickly say put it in a 10 gallon tank. Believe me it should fix the issue.

  3. Is her tank clean and heated?  Bettas will be clamped and lethargic if they're kept in cramped, cold bowls.

Are you sure it isn't parasites?  Check to see if she has any small white dots on her body, or if she has a slightly "dusty" appearance with a gold sheen.  If she does, you need an anti-parasite med like Jungle Parasite Clear.  If not, I'd try a round of Maracyn.  Again, however, before you try any more meds, make sure her tank is clean and heated to about 80 degrees.  If it isn't, chances are that's your problem and she'll perk right up when you fix it.

  4. what size tank?

    what water temp?

    filter?

PLEASE, no more meds. medications are very hard on fish. so treating her for something she doesn't have will just make her weaker.

  5. I've been told that clamped fins is merely a symptom of a problem, not a problem all by itself.  Could she have velvet? Poor water quality? Stress? Fin rot? Parasites? We need to eliminate all the possible illnesses so we can get to the real problem.
