Question:

Sick of bad beats?

I found this advice from Mike Caro's website:

If you are taking bad beats all the time, take heart: this means you have a good read on them and they *have* to draw out to beat you. So, taking a lot of bad beats is a good sign, not a bad one.

  1. Caro makes a good point, if you are playing the right odds, eventually you will win, in the long run.

However, there are many online sites where poker is played that are exceptionally loose. This applies even more so to freerolls. If you are playing at a site with very loose play, then the value of your good hand drops dramatically.

For example, at a ten player table, you have AA, go all in and 6 players call you. Each of them has a different pocket pair. You only have two cards to catch to improve your hand. 2 out of the remaining 32 cards. For one of the other 6 players to make trips and beat you, there are twelve cards out available to them as a group. 12 out of the remaining 32 cards. With five cards to go, it is highly likely one of the other players will hit his trips and win the hand.

So while Mike Caro is likely correct, taking a lot of bad beats could also mean you are playing a very loose online site. And at these types of sites, luck is a much bigger factor than skill.
