Sick of the Lockout, Kevin Love tries his hand at beach volleyball – NBA Update
The NBA lockout continues to drive the basketball players to try new and different things. Whilst many have taken the route to Europe in the face of the work stoppage, Kevin Love is heading to the beach. The Minnesota Timberwolves
power forward is set to feature in the Manhattan Beach Open next month.
Kevin Love is the young star player of the Minnesota Timberwolves. As a forward, he has developed beyond expectations, over the last couple of years, so much so that he won the NBA rebounding title last season.
Now Love is looking to put his height and jumping ability to use on a beach volley ball court.
"I thought it was a great idea, a way for me to be out in the sun, be active and have fun during the lockout," Love said Tuesday. "It's sport, it's active, it's a way to stay in shape, so I just thought it was a home run."
It’s a refreshing approach from the forward, who has shown people that the lockout doesn’t mean that you have to be doom and gloom about everything. Kevin practiced with Volley ball pros for the first time on Tuesday and enjoyed
himself while at it.
"More than anything, I'm just going to be having fun with it, playing as much as I can up to that point and just working on my craft," Love said.
The event he is participating in will last for only three days and has a prize kitty of $200,000. However that isn’t what Love is aiming for, who has realistically set himself the target of lasting at least a day in the tournament.
"I'm not necessarily expecting to win, but I'm expecting to go out there and compete," Love said.
Love has history with the game of volley ball. His dad used to go up against basketball great Wilt Chamberlain back in the day and Love himself plays for UCLA in the offseason.
Kevin is going to need to do some adjustments in order to get into beach volley ball mode. The player also has to go on a little talent hunt before the event begins as he is yet to find a partner on the sand. Once he does, the
Minnesota Timberwolves star would be having some fun out on the volley court and the player believes it will also help him keep in shape over the summer.
Once the tournament is over, he is likely to return to the basketball court, although it is not clear in what capacity. Love might be just training on his own as there isn’t any indication that he wants to go and play basketball
abroad during the NBA’s lockout.
