my 6month old rabbit is on antibiotics right now for snuffles. he has gotten his appetite back, and gained some of his weight back as well. he is on Baytril, and Critical Care formula, and he's only eating hay (and some applesauce mixed with the antibiotic and critical care)

i was wondering if i should give him something for his digestive tract like acidophilus?

would bene-bac http://www.petlanddiscounts.com/detail.asp?product_id=385049 be better?

thank you in advance.

  1. i would ask your vet before you do something.  it should be ok.  And by the way baytril is one of the antibiotics that is ok for rabbit use.

  2. Yes he should be on some type of probiotic. Antibiotics kill all the good flora in a rabbits gut. this can mess up his digestive tract badly.

I hope your vet explained that snuffles/pasturella cannot be cured. it can be controlled but the rabbit will always have the virus in their body. It can then flare up again at any time. Your rabbit should never be allowed around any other rabbits ever. He can make them sick and they will end up with snuffles.Eventually the snuffles will become untreatable and he will die from it.

You can feed him Benebac or even yogurt will work. They do like eating the yogurt.

  3. Here is my expeerince, i know i cant spell anyhow If rabbits are like cats, if he has a COLD he will die, rabbits are fragile  so i dont think it will be so good for him.
