My rat has pneumonia that has gotton worse sense I took him to the vet last week. The vet prescribed Vibramycin (doxycycline monohydrate) and at the time he was only sneezing a little bit. Sense then he's gotton wose and now repeatedly sneezes about 4 time and a row, and he's starting to get the red stuff (That I know is not blood) on his snout. My mom called the vet guy again today to ask if he had anything else I could give him and he said no. I don't know what to do. And a lot of the nearbye vets don't treat rats. My mom got me one of those air cleaner things to put in my room in case it was the air that was making him sneeze. My other rat died the day I took them both to the vet. I've been caring for my rat more sense the other one died so he won't get stressed. Is there anything else I can try to help my rat, i'm still giving him the medicatoon twice a day. It would be nice if you didn't mention anything about him dying as all my other animals including my dog have died this summer.

  1. You might want to try calling a rat vet in another area to get advice.  Even though you can't get over there, they might be able to guide you regarding next steps.  If there's something else that should be prescribed then maybe he/she can tell your local vet to do it.

It might be the case that the antibiotics are working.  Usually what happens is when you first take a drug the symptoms get worse before they get better.  Try to keep your little guy as comfortable as possible.

I found this online that you might want to show your vet or look over yourself if he really has pneumonia.  http://ratguide.com/health/lower_respira...

It's a little curious that all your animals have died recently.  Could it be a related cause like the water or food or air quality?  You might want to consider that because if it is the case, you and your family could be at risk as well.

It sucks having to watch a pet suffer, I hope things get better!

Hope that helps and good luck!

  2. Definitely see another vet. I can't believe the vet didn't prescribe Baytril with the Doxy or something. Try some recommended rat vet lists and see if any are near you:
