does anyone know of some good sites to tell me some guinea pig sicknesses? I work at Petsmart and lately we keep having sick guinea pigs. They have wobbly heads, not eating, not drinking, cant lift their heads. We have taken them all to the vet and they say its an ear infection if thats what it is then is there anything we can do to prevent it? I think their sick when we recieve them though

  1. WELL, first off, you're most likely right in thinking they are sick when you get them. secondly, if they have ear infections, what is the vet doing to help them? thirdly, back when we had several ginuea pigs i remember you had to be so careful with them because they are so very prone to "colds", which ofcourse can turn into bronchitis and or pnuemonia.

i believe the big question here is this....

is this a reputable vet?  is there someone else you can have look at them? a second opinion?  i never thought about the petstore needing a vet, but i'm sure they put someone local under contract. sketchy perhaps?

    i don't know.

but when all else fails.....GOOGLE IT!!!!!!

  2. No, there's really nothing you can do to prevent receiving sick piggies. This, unfortunately, is the responsibility of the breeder/animal mill from which Petsmart purchases them.

Generally, a round of antibiotics will clear an ear infection if the infection hasn't gotten too bad. If it has, and the piggie survives the infection, the piggie can develop permanent head tilt. This can make it difficult for the store to sell the poor thing.
