Sid Waddell’s battles against Bowel Cancer
No news could have been more astounding for the fans of darts, than to hear the news of Sid Waddell’s diagnosis of bowel cancer.
Prominent and highly reputed television personality and darts commentator was diagnosed with cancerous tumour in September 2011.
He is currently undergoing treatment to recover himself from the disease.
At 71-years of age Sid, who has always been famous for adding colour and excitement to darts, intends to make a return at the World Darts Championship that will take place at Alexandra Palace in North London.
However, it is primarily his serious state of health due to which the doctors have advised him to stay away from the arena until things get better.
This was also acknowledged by Waddell himself when he posted a tweet on his profile saying, “Bowel cancer’s not a barrel of laughs so I’ll be switching off from twitter until things get better”.
Nevertheless, Waddell, since the time of his diagnosis, has been quite optimistic about the way he has handled this entire situation.
According to his wife, Irene, he has not been taking much stress about the disease and is treating his life as normal as before. The only difference being his marginalisation from work.
She further added, “He’s responding to treatment. He has to take good care of himself because he’s prone to catching things”.
“He was hoping to do something at the World Championship but it was thought he could catch something in the notorious ‘Ally Pally’ because it’s full of people and germs,” she continued.
Starting his career from BBC by serving as a commentator for the first World Professional Darts Championship back in 1978, he entertained the audience of darts till 1994.
After leaving BBC, he was approached by the next major media organisation of the country, Sky Sports.
He continued to entertain people till the very last time before he was diagnosed with the disease.
With the passage of time, he became synonymous with the excitement and thrill of darts and its associated events.
Recognising his irrevocable contribution to darts, he has also been awarded with honours, especially on the basis of the biographical accounts he has written on players like John Lowe, Jocky Wilson and Phil Taylor.
His return in the commentary wing is being awaited not only by players, but by the audience also.
