Siddikur surpasses Lee Westwood to lead the Indonesian Masters - Golf News
the Bangladeshi golfer Siddikur outdid Lee Westwood at the find of the inaugural Indonesian Masters. Siddikur has been making a name for himself and
his nation, as he has become one of the Asia’s fasted rising young stars.
In the first round, world number two, Westwood opened with a 4-under par, 68 and finished in the tied eighth place, whereas Siddikur surpassed Westwood
for the lead. The player chipped in twice to make an amazing six-under par, 66 at the Royal Jakarta Golf Club and hence secured the lead.
This has put the Bangladeshi one shot clear of the Thailand’s three-time Asian tour Order of Merit winner, Thongchai Jaidee, Singaporean Lam Chih Bing,
Fillipoino Antonia Lascuina, Koreans Hwang Inn-choon and Hyu-bin Park and fellow country man Prayad Marksaeng. All the afore-mentioned players carded five-under par, 67 to secure second place on the leader board.
The leader of the day, Siddikur started his round with two birdies on the second and fifth hole.
The player slipped only once during the round, when he made a bogey on the eighth hole. The back nine were even more impressive as Siddikur made five birdies to finish at six under par 66. The player is in high spirits after tying for eight in the last week’s
Maybank Malaysian Open and second at SAIL Open in India.
"I was hitting and putting very well and it has been like this for a few weeks now. I'm getting more confidence every week and that's
why I've been playing so well," said Siddikur. "I saw the draw yesterday and was feeling a bit excited playing with one of the best players in the world and I have to admit I felt a bit shaky this morning."
Westwood is tied in eighth place with four other players. A victory this Sunday could put the player back on the number one spot. As of now, things
aren’t looking much in favour of the Englishman. The player struggled with his putting, but still was able to make a few closing birdies. Westwood said that he played solidly, but was frustrated on the golf course.
With Westwood going for the trophy as Siddikur leads, the Indonesian Masters will surely be an interesting tournament to follow.
