Side mouldings on civics?

Question

What year did they give you the option to not have those stupid looking grey strips on the side of the civic? was it only in 1998? or are ther some older models that do not have these ugly things? i like the 1998 civic ex sedan look ( with the side mouldings same colour as the car) but i dont have enough money for that, i want something older, but without the side mouldings, is there a civic sedan without ugly black lines on the side that is older then 98?
