Side mounted motorcycle license plate laws.?

I was recently pulled over for having a side mounted license plate - Does anyone know what michigan law states regarding this? I would appreciate it if anyone knows the actual law/number, thanks.

Michigan law states that it has to be "clearly readable from 50 feet" and having it mounted sideways is not clearly readable.

I doubt if Michigan is different than any other state. Every state I have ever lived in required the license plate to be observable from a certain distance to the rear of the vehicle. I was stationed in Michigan in the 60's and it had that requirement also.
