Question:

Side-pots in no-limit Texas Hold'em poker...?

I'm confused about what happens with the pot in the following scenario: Say player A goes all-in with 75. Then player B raises and goes all-in with 100. I understand at this point that the main pot will now contain 150 (from A and B) and a side-pot will contain 25 (just from B). What I want to know is canone final player C goes all-in with just 50? If so, which pot does this go in, and what is C entitled to win?

  1. zct explained it all pretty well here. What the dealer would do it take 50 from each all-in player and make the main pot, and all 3 players would be able to win the main pot. Now the dealer would take 25 from the other 2 players and this would be the side pot. Only players A and B can win the side pot since they are the only ones with money in that pot, and all three players can win the main pot. So for example lets say player A has a straight, and player B only has two pair, but player C has the nut flush. What would happen is that the side pot goes to player A, and the main pot goes to player C. Just start with the smallest stack and work your way up to make the side pots.

  2. ok theres 3 people in the pot so player C can win $150+ the blinds if the blinds are lower than his stack.  player A can win 200+ the blinds and player B would win it all.

  3. In your example A has moved all in for $75.  B goes all in with $100 (note this is not technically a raise, since a raise would have to be double the previous raise.  And C goes all in for $50.

So the main pot would contain $50 from each player along with the blinds.  All players are playing for this pot.  The side pot would contain $25 from A and B, for a total of $50.  Since the highest bet below the $100 is $75, player B would get back $25 from his $100 since no one called that much.

So in your example the main pot contains $150 plus any blinds you didn't mention.  The side pot contains $50, and that's about it.  Only A or B can win the side pot.  C can only win the main pot.
