  1. Asbestos siding is actually pretty decent stuff in terms of how long it will hold paint and how easy it is to paint.  I agree that power washing is a good approach to preparation.  I've actually had pretty good luck using a roller with a heavy nap to paint asbestos siding, which goes a lot faster than a brush.

If you are talking about asphalt siding, like the fake brick stuff they used to use, that would be kind of tough to cover with paint and have it last.  The other post is probably one option, using an oil based paint.  Don't overlook the idea of applying Vinyl siding on that part of the house.  If you can get it on sale, its relatively cheap and very easy to install.  Just follow the installation guide you can get at the place you buy it.

    Good luck

  2. Wow you certainly have some VERY old siding on that house.Yes you can paint over the transite(sp?(what you call asbestos)) shingles But I seriously doubt you'll get paint to stick very well to the ashphalt stuff.

  3. I assume you are talking about your roof. I considered doing this. I checked on internet and got both pros and cons on painting. (I had to paint the stone roof on my previous home every couple of years.

If you paint shingles your roof will become slippery as heck. You could slip and fall off roof. Paint may start to peel later on. I decided to have new roof put on. It is the lightest color I could get to keep sun from heating house. Also it is a vented roof the length of the apex. So attic keeps more cool. In the long run I think your best bet is to get a new roofing  put on. It will save money in the long run. OH! -AFTER- I paid my bill I got a notice from the roofing supplier that said I would have to pay for supplies if roofer did not. EVEN thou I paid the roofer for them.

So thoroughly check out the roofers background before you hire him.

  4. Any decent exterior latex paint can be used on the asbestos shingles...I really doubt that paint will stick well to teh asphalt shingles, but then, you have little to loose...at worst, you can shingle over the existing shingles with new asphalt shingle of a color you like. Asphalt shingles are not that expensive.

  5. You can try anything you like.  It is what I would do.  Painting over the asbestos shingles should be easy.  They may be porous if they are really old.  You might want to prime them first.

I'm not sure about painting over the asphalt though.  Asphalt is a petroleum product, so you are going to need an oil based paint to cover it.  I would ask at the paint store when I pick out paint, just to make sure.
