Sidney Crosby coming back but NHL still under pressure regarding concussion epidemic -NHL News Update
It could not have been a better time for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the National Hockey League (NHL) to be getting back All-Star player, Sidney Crosby, nearly a year after he was injured due to a severe concussion.
Crosby is expected to be making his comeback in their matchup against the New York Islanders on Monday, November 21, 2011, which is certainly good news for the hockey world, but it does not eliminate the concussion epidemic which has been haunting the league
ever since a number a players went out with such injuries.
Still, there are nearly 19 players who are out due to severe or minor concussions, which has pressure continuing to mount on the NHL with every day that goes by.
Not only by the players but also private and public organisations that are totally against the idea of having players hit other players when either defenceless or at all.
Sidney Crosby himself, after going out with the injury, when asked how he felt about having physical contact in the sport, and after taking into consideration his scary situation, answered with there being no need for such things to be a part of playing.
“Maybe I can get by with 90 per cent, maybe I couldn’t but I’m not going to roll the dice with that,” Crosby said in September when questioned about whether returning early could be a possible option for the 24-year-old.
The amount of talent Crosby possess is certainly unquestionable and at the moment, it is hard to compare any player to him, which is something the entire league agrees with.
"He's one of those guys, and there's only a few of them around the NHL, that tends to make the players he plays with around him better," said Buffalo Sabres defenseman Robyn Regher. "There's good players and then there's great players and that's what great
players do."
If players like Sidney Crosby can face such frightening injuries early on in their careers, than it gives the view that each and every player is vulnerable to such problems which at one time had rumours spread about how his career had possibly ended.
