Sidney’s Candy done with his quarter crack problems and ready to make an impact in the Breeders’ Cup Mile
The 4-year-old colt, Sidney’s Candy is trained by Todd Pletcher for Rubio B. Stable and WinStar Farm and the Candy Ride colt is ready for his next assignment in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011.
Out of Fair Exchange by Storm Cat, Sidney’s Candy had a quarter crack before going into his previous race the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on 8 October, 2011.
It appears that Sidney’s Candy has overcome his problems with a quarter crack coming out of the Shadwell Turf Mile with a finish on the money, behind Gio Ponti and Get Stormy.
The race was run over at a distance of a mile, as Gio Ponti won the race with the winning time of 1 minute and 34.17 seconds, as Get Stormy finished second while Sidney’s Candy under Joel Rosario turned in a promising performance when the pair finished third.
The problem seems to be under control, and if anyone wants to be more assured over the colt’s fitness, they can check out his 30 October move at Churchill Downs where he turned in a work of half a mile in 49.82 seconds in company with the 2-year-old finale.
All systems are go for Sidney’s Candy as he is well on track for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Initially Sidney’s Candy was cross entered in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile to fall back on something if anything went wrong, but trainer Todd Pletcher liked Sidney’s
Candy’s chances on turf.
It was turning out to be a brilliant season for Sidney’s Candy, but a distant 8th in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga for a seven furlong dash spoiled a perfectly good run season.
Prior to the disappointing run at Saratoga, Sidney’s Candy was 2nd in the Grade 2 Mervyn Leroy at Hollywood Park on 1 1/16 miles over poly track, again runner up in the Grade 2 American Handicap  also at about a 1 mile at Hollywood Park on turf
and then a first place finish in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga on turf.
The main aim for the workouts before the race for Sidney’s Candy is to learn to relax before he bursts out with pace, and according to Pletcher it all went smooth and according to plan.
