The President of the Tuscan side has revealed a late bid for the former Juventus star in the January transfer window, and understands the striker’s snub.
Siena President, Massimo Mezzaroma, has revealed that his club failed in a deadline day bid to sign A.C Milan striker, Filippo Inzaghi.
Mezzaroma has admitted that his club was interested in signing the veteran striker for a long time, but they accelerated their efforts to sign him in the final days of the transfer window.
While talking to the reporters, Massimo Mezzaroma said:
“We had been thinking about Inzaghi for quite some time. We intensified our actions in the last few days of the window because we thought that he may decide to come and give us a hand.”
The Bianconeri chief admitted that it was difficult for Inzaghi to leave the San Siro, and he respects the Italian’s decision to snub the Robur.
“I believe that he thought about it for a long time and, in the end, that it was a difficult decision for him to make.”
Inzaghi has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at the Rossoneri, and has made only six appearances for the Italian Champions this season.
The 38-year-old needs only six goals to break Roberto Baggio’s record of 292 goals in Italian football, and he is looking to become the most successful Italian striker before hanging his boots. Having scored 70 goals in European
club competitions, he is only second to Spanish striker Raul in the record books.
The former Parma striker is in his 11th year at San Siro, having spent majority of his stay as a first-choice striker. The talismanic striker has scored 125 goals in 296 matches for the Rossoneri. He has also been part
of Serie A and UEFA Champions League winning squads twice in his career for the Italian Champions.
As his reputation as a top marksman continues to recede with his failing stamina and speed, the legendary striker might opt for a peaceful retirement from professional football come the end of the 2011/12 season.
