Sighteeing in Frankfurt.?

Question

Visiting Frankfurt,Germany 3 days June/July. Are there any "must see/do" places to visit. Also any day boat trips recommended.

I really like walking around through town, maybe starting at the Dom (a cathedral) through the town to the Römer (most beutiful marketplace), stopping along the way to get some great icecream, maybe get lunch somewhere, stop at one of the muesums (Städl is always great), walk along the river or the Museumsufer and just hang out.

There are plenty of cruises you can take up and down the Mainz river, some even going to the Rhine a couple of kilometers down the Main from Frankfurt.

The Palmengarten (http://palmengarten-frankfurt.de/) is also nice if you like parks and plants, the zoo (http://zoo-frankfurt.de/) is great with tons of animals, a nighthouse and plenty of things to see.

There are always concerts going on - contemporary and classical alike, either classical concerts at the Alte Oper (www.alteoper.de) or more modern stuff like Eric Clapton, 50 cent or Billy Joel coming up at the Festhalle (http://www.messefrankfurt.com/festhalle/... There are plenty of evening and nighttime activities, just go to drink some Appelwoi as Tod suggested, hang out at Sachsenhausen (part of Frankfurt famous for just walking around, drinking and meeting people), go to dance salsa at the Chango or check out the local jazz-scene. Some people like to tour the redlight district close to the bahnhof just to say they´ve been there.. lol.. it can be fun as well.

If you´re a spa person you may like to pack your favorite swimming trunks and take the train or bus up to Bad Homburg to the Taunustherme (www.taunus-therme.de) to relax for a couple of hours (just get used to the non-textile saunas or bring a large towel :-D).

Frankfurt has fun things to offer for anyone!

The historical sites of Frankfurt are in a concentrated area and can be seen in one day or half day.  At the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof there is a tourist info office where you can buy a city map for .50 cents. Open Mo-Fr 08:00-21:00 & Sat/Sun/Holidays 09-18:00. There is also a tourist office at Römerberg (Römerberg 27). Check out the Römers, Römerberg, Kaiserdom, Eiserner Steg(Iron Bridge) and the Riverwalk there, and zoo if that interests you. The riverwalk has great city skyline views of the skyscrapers. You may want to go to the top of one of the city buildings where you get a bird's eye view - HeLaBa tower has been recommended to me which you can see from Hauptwache, a historical guard station which is now a cafe. Or you can also go to the viewing platform of the Main Tower, which is the headquarters of the State Bank of Hesse and Thuringia. The platform is about 200m above the streets of Frankfurt.

As for boat trips the best one in the area is the Middle Rhine from Rüdesheim to Koblenz.  You could get off the KD boat earlier in one of the other villages along the Rhine, such as St Goar, St. Goarshausen, or Braubach.  If you get off at Braubach, you can see Marksburg Castle(most well-preserved castle along the Rhine)  - either walk or take the small shuttle train to the castle from the town.  

St. Goarshausen and Braubach are on the opposite side of the river from St. Goar/Frankfurt side.  There is a passenger ferry between St. Goar and St. Goarshausen, if you wanted to get off at St. Goar and see that town.  Then from St Goarshausen, just take the next train to Braubach.

You could come back on the right side of the river/Braubach side and see Rüdesheim.  Or just take the train back to Frankfurt HBf(Hauptbahnhof/main train station) which would be easier from the St. Goar side.

According to bahn.de there is a direct train that leaves from the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof at 07:53 and arrives in Ruedesheim at 09:01. [ Frankfurt(Main)Hbf -> Rüdesheim(Rhein) - from and to stops on DB site ] You get a discount for the KD boat cruise if you show your DB train tickets you used to get there.

For the 3rd day you could see Heidelberg, which is about an hour from Frankfurt or just spend more time exploring Frankfurt.  You definitely can't go wrong with the Middle Rhine boat cruise and Heidelberg.

Personally, I like walking around the old town, trying local food specialities, drinking the local Appelwoi (Hard cider) and shopping.

Also, don't be afraid to venture out of town to nearby villages, or to the Taunus for hiking. You are in the middle of Germany, so to say, so day trips are easy and everything is close by.

go and see tha main river and try to get on the biggest building in frankfurt, as i remember it is the "citybank" building, you'll love the view from up there!! It is great how the city is really modern, with all those huge glass buildings but on the other way, don't miss the old town, i mean the old buildings and streets, it's great how new and old are combined!! Don't forget the airport, the biggset in europe
