"It is surely of the essence of an emotion that we should be aware of it. - Sigmund Freud"

Does anyone know how to interpret what this quote means? Is there a deeper meaning than what I'm seeing? (I'm into a soulsearching stage right now...humor me hehe )

  1. It just means how to be aware of a reaction ( the human emotion)  from external stimulas.

    How it makes us feel...

  2. How can I improve on the words of the doctor?....It's plainly enough said...

  3. I believe that Freud was trying to say that we can't know ourselves if we aren't willing to feel our feelings.  Today we call it "stuffing our feelings."   When we can't deal with our emotions, sometimes we block them out and try to act as if they aren't there.   Powerful feelings can be upsetting and sometimes very painful, but to ignore them permanently is very risky -- it can lead to whole range of serious mental health issues.

  4. The reason we have emotions is because our minds have learned to respond to them accordingly,  they are not evil as religion teaches, but  essential to our existence

  5. Basically he is saying that emotions are supposed to be felt.

In other words, what good is an emotion if you don't know that you are experiencing it?
