i just had my son about 2 yrs ago, he is deaf and a lot of other conditions,( he needs to eat out of a tube in his stomach and will never walk). I need to start learning sign language to communicate with him and to teach my older and younger children. Anyone know any online websites with basic signs?

  1. www.aslpro.com is my favorite

  2. sign language varies by country-there are even dialects within a country-

PECS or homemade picture communication is good-it can eventually be tied into a computer to speak for teh user

Any child under 3 with developmental delays is eligible for Early Intervention in the USA-in some states it is free-in some it is sliding scale fee--

you can get Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy, as well as deveopmental intervention-

services range from 1 our 2x a year to 20 or more hours per week.  The therapists could provide you with resources

Also, once the child is 3-he is eligible to be in a public preschool program-or sent to a specialized school by the district (you do not pay)

I don't know any specific videos/sites off hand-but there are 'sign with me' type videos that teach sign to young children (and their caregivers

    there are sign language dictionaries

    google

    sign language dictionary

or the word and sign language.

make a list of 3-5 signs that are most important to your child to start with-favoprite toys, music, drink (if he drinks) and start with those

  3. PECS are great- you get them through a program called board maker- I would talk to a speech therapist about signing with him- so as to make signing a lot less stressful to learn- they will advise you of the signs that will be useful and when they will be so as to not overwhelm you or him- I would recomend sticking with signed English vs. ASL- it is a lot easier and more commonly known in the US- ASL is actually a different language- the signs are not derived from actual english words so they don't always make as much sense- where in signed english a lot of signs use the hand shape of the letter the word starts with- GOOD LUCK- it is very hard figuring out all of the best things to do for your son, and the best order to do them in, but very admirable, and well worth it

  4. Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your son, God bless you and him!  I'm sorry, but I don't know any good sign language web sites, however, I do want to make sure that you are aware of a communication system, called the PECS... Picture Exchange Communication System.  Sign Language is universal and a wonderful tool, but if your son cannot walk, he may have some motor planning issues (as well) and sign may be hard for him.  The PECS system is pictures and the person (simply) pulls/points to the picture in exchange for the object.  A speech therapist or special educator should be able to help you set this up.  You can also find it on the Internet, simply by typing in PECS or the actual words.  I wish you both luck and prayers...Be well.

  5. ASL Browser has tons of signs. I am fluent in ASL. I think it's great. You would benefit more from taking classes though.

  6. man i wish i did i feel sorry for u and your son good luck. i know i didn't help but maybe if u clicked on deafness sign language u might find something
