Sign languages what are the differences

Does american differ from english and is Makaton different again. Which is more commonly used and why. Am in UK.

  2. Yes, I'm aware that there are differences between American and UK Sign Language.

    From what I understand people from the UK tend to use both hands when signing but a lot of the signs in American Sign Language are used using one hand.

    Makaton is a Sign Language predominantly used with people that have a learning disability. It's used to support spoken language and not to replace it completely. Carers use it to help clients associate with/understand objects and actions....

  3. Hi Ange... Thomas when he first started school they used the Picture exchange system, and now he is getting older they use basic sign and makaton, As your son is still young i would try the PEC system with him first and see how he gets on you can get these cards from ebay too see link below x

  4. i work in a nursery, and makaton seems to be used most by speech therapists etc, we teach simple makaton to all our children, they really enjoy it.

    i have also known signalong to be used to, which is a form of british sign language.

    you can get a book with all the makaton signs and black and white pictures in.
