  1. It means that you are far braver to not give in to animal instincts and violence. If you need no gun to protect yourself it means you have enough brains to know you can do without and know how to use the brain you have to figure other ways out. Gun is the easy way out of the coward who will not use his head to protect his and other people's life.


  2. Meaning that , in time, the person figured out that his father was brave because he handled problems without resorting to violence, although that was probably a difficult and dangerous thing to do.
