Question:

Signing a new contract with AT&T?

I want to, like a lot of people, get the iPhone. When you sign a contract with AT&T do you have to pay any sort of deposit? I know you pay for the phone outright, but I went a year or so ago to get a phone through them and they said I would have had to pay some ridiculous deposit. Did anyone else have this problem, or did this guy just not know what he was talking about?

  1. I know this isn't answering your question directly, but it will solve it.

Unless you're some business mogul who needs internet and email nonstop throughout the day, the iPhone is not worth paying for if you're using it as just a phone/mp3. With an iPhone you have to have a $30 email and data plan on it, or else everytime you accidently touch the 'internet' button (and it WILL happen), you will get charged for it. I went over this with the lady at AT&T, and she said that honestly, many people want the iPhone just to talk and stuff, but it's just not worth it!

  2. OMG.....don't do it!!! AT& T has never gave me anything but problems!!!! Go with Verizon, US Cellular or anything else, but AT& T or Sprint!!

  3. My guess is a deposit is only required if you have horrible credit.  Most likely there is a $50 activation fee or something along those lines and taxes along with the first months service.  Plus phone cost.

  4. The deposit is based off of credit scores. With Carriers like Verizon & Sprint, they cap the deposit at $400. This means no matter how bad your credit, you could get a phone and plan with the deposit. With AT&T, they do not cap the deposit. This means, the worse your credit, the higher the deposit. My sister had to pay a $750.00 deposit. Well, she terminated her service within the first 5 days and got her deposit back and switch to Verizon.

I have not had this problem, but people do. They are also really strict about it when it comes to the iPhone. Also, you said like a lot of people want the iPhone, I would say that is an incorrect statement. The United States iPhone has been returned more than almost any other phone on the market. It is because AT&T has hardly any 3G throughout the USA. Apple pushed the 3G service on them. If the 3G iPhone was never released they probably wouldn't have any 3G coverage.
