Question:

Sigs for a leo gecko

Hi guys. I'm asking that you guys post and tell how nice and docile leopard geckos are. My mom thinks their gross, but i know its not true. I have done my research. I can present some.

-Leopard Geckos are NOCTURNAL, not requiring UVB lighting like iguanas, bearded dragons, etc.

-Calci-sand is BAD. No matter how much you hear it, it causes impactions and you should not use it. Repti-turf is better since it is not edible and easy to clean.

-Rock Heaters, ALSO BAD!!! Leos can go on top of them and burn themselves on the rock.

-Diet-you SHOULD alternate every once and awhile between crickets and mealworms, but is not necessary.

-Juveniles should have cycles for their calcium/vitamin intake. Weekdays they should have calcium coated food, and on the weekends vitamin supplements coated on their food.(lightly coated that is)

-The leftover crickets that are not eaten should either be taken out or left food so they don't nibble on the Geckos toes out of hunger.

-The food should be gutted before fed.

-A calcium dish and a water dish should be left on the opposite side of the tank.

-Etc...

I am offering to pay for the whole thing, made a powerpoint which i will show tomorrow, and calculated the total cost after tax.

Some info about me, i'm 16, straight A student, and i am holding down a job right now so i can afford the food supplements and food itself all the time. Thanks for reading this!!!!

  1. Wow, well for starters it sounds like you have really done your research!! Making a powerpoint is going above and beyond in my opinion. I have 2 leopard geckos, i am 19 years old. A UVB light is NOT necessary although I have lights for both of mine(they each have their seperate tanks). During the day we have the heat lamps on and at night their heat pads kick on and their lights turn off.

When my boyfriend first told me he wanted a leopard gecko I was unsure of the whole thing. I do not have a problem with reptiles but thought it would be pointless or he would get sick of it. I was completely wrong! I absolutely love both of our geckos ; Elvis and Iggy (iggy and the stooges). The only thing that can be a pain to keep up with is the food, but you seem to understand that you will be buying food every 1-2 weeks for your gecko. I have heard mixed review about sand in general, not even just calcium sand but having sand in their tanks. A woman who is a reptile rescuer and breeder told me only super tiny geckos can't be in sand, and that most geckos don't end up eating or inhaling their sand. My geckos have calcium sand (not deep at all) and are doing fine. I've had them for almost a year now, they are growing a bit bigger every week! Leopard geckos aren't gross, they are pretty clean except for needing to scoop their p**p out of their tanks (no big deal).

  2. Leopard Geckos are a great starter lizard. They usually defecate in the same place making cleaning easy. I use paper towel on the bottom of my cages. It makes it a lot easier to clean the cage. I have 3 Leos! Remember you have to keep a moist hide too. I think that is the hardest part myself. I live in a place with very low humidity and I have to put water in there hide daily. I use coco bark in there hide. The main way they ingest sand big or small is by catching the cricket or other prey against the ground. Thus ingesting sand with their food. I have seen blocked geckos big and small. This also happens from having a female with no moist hide. They can store sperm for a year or more so there doesn't need to be a male present for egg production. If they start producing eggs without a moist hide they will die! Check out http://www.anapsid.org for the best info available!

  3. You could make a care sheet.

Petco do 1000 crickets for $19.99.

Leopard Geckos are easy to look after.

They are like small furless dogs.

  4. Great research leopard geckos are defvinently not gross, they can be easily trained to use a litter box.  as for gut loading the crickets fruits and veggies will work and so will store brought gut load.

  5. I'm glad to see someone actually doing research before asking questions!

I would highly recommend not using any lose substance due to the blockage it can happen. The turf stuff is good, make sure that you do have a few sheets on hand, so you can change out when needed.

I am glad to see someone who actually has done research before buying, but I do have to say, it is up to your parents, you are 16 and living in there house. Hopefully w/ your presentation you're mom will change her mind. I'd also offer, if you're grades go down, that you'll give the geckos to a friend until grades get back up, something like that. Make it kinda a win/win in a way for both of you.

  6. WOW!!  I am surprised at how much research you have done.  My daughter volunteers at a local reptile rescue center and we have adopted 2 leopard geckos..you are right about not using sand, but please don't use repti-turf either.  They can get their tiny claws stuck in it and end up pulling them out!!  One of ours only has 1 claw left because he was kept on the repti-turf before we got him.  I can only imagine the pain that must have caused :(  Other than that, you have a great argument and are certainly well prepared.  Good Luck!!
