New Tottenham Hotspur signing Gylfi Sigurdsson has hailed the ambition at the club and talked about his views on joining Spurs and manager Andre Villas-Boas’ vision.
The Icelandic international midfielder spent last season on loan at Swansea City from his parent club Hoffenheim. The player impressed in his short time with the Swans, scoring 7 goals in 18 appearances for the Welsh side.
The 6 ft tall midfielder is known for his long range passing, shooting ability and being an expert at taking free kicks. Former Swans boss Brendan Rodgers rated the player very highly and wanted to take him to Liverpool when he was appointed as their manager.
Sigurdsson had other plans, and instead chose to sign for Tottenham, stating that it did not take much convincing to join the North London club.
Spurs are set to face http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in a pre-season friendly at Baltimore and the midfielder is confident that his team will do well against the Reds. Sigurdsson thinks that the team is headed in the right direction and have a strong future. He hopes to be an
important part of that future, and speaking to the media, he said:
"Everything (about the team is attractive). There's a new training ground, it's a massive club with fantastic players. There's talk about a new stadium. The ambition of the club is really high."
Tottenham had missed out on a Champions League spot last season despite finishing fourth. This was the second time in a year that the club failed to qualify for the elite European tournament. Perhaps last season was a bit harsh as luck was not in favour
of the North London club as Chelsea, who finished sixth in the league went on to lift the Champions League trophy and qualified for the tournament instead of Spurs.
Sigurdsson is hopeful of helping his new club building on their fourth place finish last season and breaking back into Europe’s most elite club competition.
"Tottenham missing out on the Champions League was really unlucky," Sigurdsson said. "It's a fantastic team and hopefully we can continue to do what we did last season."
The 22-year old playmaker also hailed new manager Andre Villas-Boas and added:
"He didn't really have to sell himself because what he did at Porto was fantastic. Things didn't work out for him at http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 but that's probably one of the hardest jobs (in football).”
