Tottenham Hotspur player Gylfi Sigurdsson is targeting a good start against Maribor in the Europa League Group J game tonight, and insists that an early goal tonight will be ideal for the team.
The Icelandic midfielder believes that scoring the first goal tonight will force Maribor to attack Tottenham, and open up gaps in the defence for them to exploit.
Tottenham play hosts to Maribor in tonight’s crucial Group J encounter in the Europa League. With only three draws to their name, Tottenham sit in third place, with the group wide open with only three points separating all four teams.
A win tonight will take Tottenham up to second place, and put them in prime position to progress through to the next stage of the competition. The team will travel to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lazio-c39775 and then host Greek side Panathinaikos next month
to round off the group stages.
Spurs will therefore need maximum results in the next two games if they wish to progress, and manger Andre Villas-Boas has urged his team to grab all three points tonight.
Midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson feels that Tottenham should be able to break the deadlock as early as possible tonight, and force the Slovenian champions into attacking them so that they can exploit them on the counter attack. Speaking to reporters, the 23-year
old said:
“It would be ideal if we get an early goal. That means Maribor can’t just sit there and defend and it would open the game up. That would also get the crowd behind us and it will be a great atmosphere. That’s important for us.”
Sigurdsson featured on the score sheet in Tottenham’s last encounter in the Europa League, but Tottenham are still without a win in the competition. Sigurdsson insists that grabbing all three points is highly important tonight. He added:
“We’ve drawn all three games so far and the group is tight with Lazio top on five points, Maribor on four, we’re on three and Panathinaikos on two.”
