Silk Hall causes upset in Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle – Horseracing news
Silk Hall caused a massive upset in the Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle (Grade 3) at Tipperary in Ireland on Sunday, July 21, 2013.
Although the eight-year-old gelding has got plenty of experience, he was not expected to deliver a winning result in the presence of some top quality stallions. As a result, he was given a general starting price of 25 to 1, which created a doubt in the minds
of the punters, who hesitated in risking much bets on him.
However, the stallion from United Arab Emirates stunned his rivals with a superb run. He galloped really nicely and was perfect over the hurdles, which allowed him to make his camp proud at the end of the day. His margin of victory was under one length,
but it was more than enough to secure a cash prize of £33,028.
Stamina was the key in the two mile competition, which had attracted a total of seven participants. Silk Hall started off nicely and kept on improving his speed as the race progressed. The difficult part was to stay until the end of the race, which he did
brilliantly in the end.
Although there was plenty of pressure on the seasoned challenger inside the final furlong, he did not panic and continued running smoothly.
After the race, the winning trainer James Lambe said, “People may have said it was pie-in-the-sky stuff running him in this race but if he ran to the form he showed when third in the Scottish Champion Hurdle he had his chance. We put blinkers on him during
the week as I felt he was getting lazy and you can see he's a bit tubby. It's fantastic for Eddie and the plan was to make it a good test.”
He went onto say, “He'll hardly go to the Galway Hurdle as he really wants further. He'll go for the Grade C handicap hurdle on the Saturday of Galway.”
Overall, Silk Hall has participated in a total of 37 races in his career and this was his seventh victory. He has had a difficult time during the 2013 season, but things have finally come his way in Ireland.
