Silkie rooster?

We have 10 chickens, breeds are listed bellow.

Buff orpington- 1 hen

silver laced wyandotte- 2 hens

brahma (buff and dark) - 2 hens

Faverolle (french hen) - 1 hen

Barred rocks - 2 hens

White silkies- 1 hen, 1 rooster.

Well romeo (our silkie rooster) is always mating with one of our wyandottes, well he tries everybody but her mostly. (all but the silkies are standards) Well I was wondering if a silkie rooster could fertalize a egg of a chicken much bigger than him. He dosen't seem to favor the silkie hen. But yesterday some of our chickens started to lay eggs, wyandotte included. So could some become fertalized? I don't want to incubate a un-fertalized egg. I have tried candling but dont think these are fertalized.

  1. Yes he can,I had a Banty Rooster that favored my Rhode Island Red Hens, and WAl-la need I say more! I also had a Banty Hen that took on the job of incubating the eggs of a large Hen,and after the eggs hatched and the Chicks were a few weeks old, they were bigger than their surrogate Mother! That was a funny site to see, believe me! Nature is remarkable,as so many things are possible!

  2. He can mate with any hen he can catch and mount. My mom has some silkie mixed chicks. Her silkie rooster got out and bred with her barred rock hen. They have some very pretty chicks now. They look like really fluffy barred rocks with feathered legs.Anyways I would put them in the incubator for about a week then candle them, you will be able to see better when you candle them.

  3. Yes of course .. as long as the rooster can successfully get on the chicken and mate with her ..

    he will fertilize the eggs

like someone said don't candle an egg before incubation .. all you'll see is yolk .. air space etc

you won't no for definite if it is fertile until after a week of being in an incubator /or (under a broody)

But to be honest . . it's better to have silkies mate with silkies .. Wyandottes with Wyandottes etc

although there is nothing wrong with the way you have it =]

    They just won't be purebred.

  4. Yes roos can fertilize any and all hens if they do there job right.

  5. Yes, a small rooster certainly could fertilize a larger hen.

No point in candling a *brand new* egg.  Put them in the incubator and wait a few days.
