when i look at pictures of cities in Ireland, the homes are always painted in vibrant colors. Is there a reason for this?

  1. I don't think it's common at all. Only in villages in Irish/Touristy spots would you find the houses painted like this e.g. West Cork or Killarney.  Would be nice though if it was like this all over..........

  2. Just the joy of being different, like putting on new clothes.

Whatever the Dubs say, it IS common in the small towns, especially in the South. I think it's from the time when whitewash was all that was available and some people added mineral colours to escape the uniformity.

  3. In Dublin it is not common, but in country towns it is common.

It might have been done just to brighten the place up.

Don't know if there was a reason for it, maybe to be able to say, I live in the pink house.......

  4. I don't know where you are seeing these pictures.  I live in dublin too and houses are painted white or cream or are fronted with red brick or pebble dashing!

Sometimes in rural areas you see houses painted blue and green and pink but it is not that common, most would be white or cream.  Certainly not in the cities anyway.

  5. I really don't know if there's a reason. You don't find colourful houses every where in Ireland, but when I was living in Killarney all my neighbours had colourful houses. My next door neighbour had a purple house, the neighbours across the road to me had a bright blue house with bright yellow window sills, and alot of my neighbours had peach or pink houses.I liked all the colourful houses where I was living. My house was bright yellow).

  6. they are happy colours for a dull rainy day

  7. Obviously the Dubs have never been outside the pale.

Galway city has many medievil buildings thaat are painted in different colours see shop street and the Quays area. The "long walk" in galway is an example. small towns are also colourfull. I agree with the white wash comment but will also add that the tidy towns competition has a part to play.

With galway city it is a historical reason. the gargoyles and carvings on the door ways were painted in reds yellows etc. If you visit galway, go to our new civic museum, and all this will be explained.

I would say that georgan and victorian england probably sucked all the colour from dublin buildings, but there are still some beautifull buildings in dublin.

  8. I've never seen brightly coloured houses around so i'd say its just for the sake of the pictures that some houses are painted colourful

  9. I live in Dublin and I'm drawing a blank...do you have any links to these pictures?? I'm really curious now!

  10. what some fail to realise  is that there are many areas of Dublin, including east wall, crumlin, cabra, and many others which are classed as corporation houses. I live in one of these and every house on my road is a different colour and lots of them are pretty vibrant, and it is not just houses in the countryside or other rural cities that have this individual mentality...

the reason people are not aware of the vibrant colours in Dublin is because all new developments are either apartment blocks or schemes of new houses, where there is a stipulation where you can't change the colour of your house because they are built to an architect's specifications and they want to show that there is uniformity between different schemes...

it all comes down to individual tastes and I think it works well, especially if you have visitors and all you have to say is..." you can't miss my house, it's the big red one on the corner " hahahaha
