Silly questions about your country?

i am Australian and I get a lot of funny questions that seem silly, but people honestly want to know about my country.... most commonly about the Kangaroo and a lot of people think it is a tiny little island..... what strange/silly questions have you been seriously asked by outsiders?

  1. 1/ Are the roads in Canada really paved with Gold.

    2/ Is there really a wall of snow separating Canada and the USA these are two questions I have heard MANY times from american people


  2. I was asked "what state is Germany in?"

    My response: "In Utah"

  3. i'm from new zealand and we probably have just as many if not more silly q's asked about our country

    1. do they speak english in new zealand?

    2. people mistaking new zealand as being a state of australia

    3. people thinking there are kangaroos in NZ

    4. people thinking that we are basically "attached" to antarctica

    5. people not realising that NZ is in the southern hemisphere and therefore our summer is northern hemispheres winter and vice versa with winter

    the list could go on...

    the worst thing is that yahoo answers often "suggests" the genral australia category for Q's relating to NZ thus continuing the wrong notion that NZ is part of Australia

  4. i'm from the US but a question regarding Southern California (where I was raised) was "Are all the people there like in The OC" (the television show- arrogant, party-people, ditzy, fashionable, super rich with drama-filled lives)?

  5. Are there toilets in my country? Do they flush? Do we use dirt roads? Electric staircase? No way, that's impossible... And so is the subway. Why does it look like Spain?

  7. When i went to america about 20 years ago, i was asked some really silly questions. I was asked if we have fish knives, yoghurt, boy scouts, department stores, and if Id ever eaten spaghetti. I think their Idea of the English was that we all lived in a John Constable painting! hahaha

  8. Well...I'm form India and the have heard the most wierd things

    1) the country is just full of elephants and snake charmers (yes I cm to work on an elephant back duh!)

    2) Thier is no middle class in the country only v. rich and v. poor (India had probably one of the largest middle class population)

    3) All Indians are vegetarians

    etc etc etc

  9. I live near San Francisco and I am sometimes asked 'Is the Golden Gate Bridge really made of gold?  Or is is it just gold-plated?"  And this is from other Americans.

    Foreigners ask me "Do ALL Americans carry guns?  How many guns do you own?  Are you a redneck?"

    But I have done the same thing.  When I was in high school I talked to a man in New Zealand on the ham radio. I said "Oh, New Zealand, that's right next to Australia, isn't it?" He reminded me that New Zealand was farther from Australia than Canada was from Mexico.  I also met someone from Ireland and thought that was part of England. 8^<

  10. lol. i'm was born in the US. but my family is Thai. So some questions include: "Are you Chinese?" "No I'm Thai." "Are you Thaiwanese?" "No I'm Thai." "Is Thailand in China?"

    "Does Thailand people eat cats and dogs?"

    Answer: it snows 15 feet in the winter and summer! Duh!
