Silva and Sonnen as comic book characters on UFC’s Facebook page – UFC News
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and opponent Chael Sonnen have been transformed into comic heroes by UFC, a creative way of marketing their July 7 rematch. The comic strips will be posted every day on UFC’s Facebook page as countdown to UFC 148
when both fighters will collide.
Chael Sonnen is the number one contender for the title. Their first match was held back in 2010, when Chael Sonnen lost just seconds before the fight ended. Sonnen dominated 4.5 rounds, but just at the end of the fifth round, Silva was able to trick him
into a submission move, making Sonnen tap out. Their rematch was previously scheduled to be held in May in Brazil but due to logistic problems, the venue was shifted to Las Vegas.
As of now, the event, UFC 148, will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Dave Golding will draw the comic strips from Britain. Just at the age of 37, Dave has established himself one of the most prominent comic book artists in the industry. He is working
as a professional since 2006. It should be noted here that Dave’s major accomplishment was Dare graphic novel ‘The Hunter’. Since then, his work has been appearing in various sci-fi fiction shows of Britain.
The idea behind Silva vs. Sonnen’s comic strips is to tell fans the history of both the fighters and their rivalry.
When Silva was notified of the idea, he remarked, “I’ve always been a comic book fan since I was young. I liked heroes who had everyday problems but still tried to help people.”
Similarly, Sonnen was no less excited. He remarked, “What a thrill, to see myself in comic book form. Never before has a real life super-hero been turned into a mortal in a comic book, you will never see this in your lives again.”
As always, the UFC has found an innovative way of creating hype of their matches. The rematch between Sonnen and Silva has already been rated as the biggest event in UFC’s history. President of UFC Dana White believes the event will break all previous records
of the organisation, in terms of pay-per-view proceedings.
