Silvana Lima and Courtney Conlogue remain invincible in Round 3 of Roxy Pro France 2011
The adrenaline-pumping surfing action continued at La Grande Plage in Biarritz, South Africa, on Thursday, July 14, with the first and second heat of Roxy Pro’s no-elimination Round 3.
Brazil’s Silvana Lima continued to assert her excellent form by claiming victory in the first heat by downing France’s Lee Ann Curren and Australia’s Tyler Wright, who finished in second and third place respectively. The success sent Lima directly to the quarter-finals, while Curren and Wright moved to the sudden-death Round 4 in order to earn their place in the quarter-finals.
The second heat saw America’s Courtney Conlogue defeat Hawaii’s Carissa Moore and France’s Pauline Ado, to remain invincible in the event and advance to the quarter-finals. Moore and Ado rounded out the second and third positions and headed to the fourth round to compete in a battle for survival.
The ASP Elite from Brazil, Lima was already high on confidence because of getting off to an amazing start at the latest stop of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour. She continued the momentum going with another amazing performance on the fourth day of the competition to make it straight into the quarter-finals, more confident than before due to complete domination in the Round 3 heat.
Almost halfway through the heat, the 26-year-old Brazilian locked a wave to pull off a series of spectacular stunts and earned 8.17 for the effort. She collected another 7.17 off a wave soon to move to a heat-total of 15.34, the highest two-wave total in the competition so far.
France’s Curren and Australia’s Wright were unable to respond to Lima’s remarkable performance and even though they put up a determined fight, their efforts turned out to be futile. The French finished in second place with a heat-total of 10.93 points, while the ASP Women’s World Tour rookie from Australia finished third after earning 9.73 points in total from her two best waves.
The second heat turned out to be a real intense battle between America’s Conlogue, Hawaii’s Moore and France’s Ado. Moore kicked off things by catching the first wave to earn 6.00 points off it, but Ado immediately locked one to score 6.67 points from it and move ahead of the ASP No.1.
A while later, Moore added another 5.70 points to her account to move to a two-wave total of 11.70 points and regain the lead. As the heat progressed, both Conlogue and Ado kept on hunting for a score to get past the Hawaiian.
With almost 3 minutes remaining on the stopwatch, Ado collected a 4.90 off a wave to reach a two-wave total of 11.57 points, still one place behind Moore on the scoreboard. However, Conlogue, also known as Lil Tiger, waited for the last moment to pounce on her rivals and take them both down with her winning scores of 6.73 and 5.90. Consequently, she went straight to the quarter-finals, while Moore and Ado once again found themselves heading to a sudden-death round.
Whether it is just nerves or is Moore really struggling to find form remains to be seen. Whatever the case may be, she needs to regain her rhythm fast or else the inconsistent form during the current event may prove to be costly for her and her chances at the ASP Women’s World Title.
