Silver Max looking to continue his winning streak in the Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs
Silver Max will aim to stretch his record of five victories to six in the Grade 2, $600,000 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs on 21st July, 2012, which runs over a distance of 1 ¼ miles.
Trained by Dale Romans, the sophomore seems to be in pretty good shape. To conserve his energy and, run him in this event, he was scratched from the Grade 2 American Derby at Arlington Park, which his stable-mate, Cozzetti, landed.
The son of Badge of Silver will be stretched out in distance, since he will be taking on a larger distance than he is used to. This race will be a real test of his stamina and it will show what he is really made of.
In his five previous victories, two of them are graded victories, which definitely add to his appeal for this race.
With jockey Robby Albarado on his back, he triumphed in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes in April, 2012, where he completed the 1 1/16 mile course in 1 minute and 41.81 seconds, defeating Travel Advisory.
The colt maintained his composure in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes where he seized the victory by an immense margin of 5 ¾ lengths over Travel Advisory again, this time completing the 1 1/16 mile race in 1 minute and 41.10 seconds at Churchill Downs
in May, 2012.
Owned by Mark Bacon and Dana Wells, the three-year-old has claimed 6 victories in his twelve starts, now he has earnings of $503,167.
In this grand race, he will be mounted by Robby Albarado and, will enter from post position 7 as a high-weight of 123 pounds.
Since Silver Max is mainly a turf horse, the surface of the track will benefit him and he might be able to bolt through the track.
Finnegans Wake, also trained by Dale Romans will try his luck in this race and improve his racing technique. Teamed with rider, Kent J. Desormeaux, he will enter with the weight of 117 pounds.
The son of Powerscourt, out of mare Boat's Ghost, has two victories to his name. He recently claimed an Allowance Race on 10th June, 2012, at Churchill Downs, which covered 1 1/8 miles. Defeating his stable-mate will be difficult
but he will try his best.
