What exactly is the silver stuff that you scratch away like on lottery tickets and stuff? Like, if anyone knows what it's made of, that would be helpful:)

  1. There are two methods used to make the protective coating applied to a lottery ticket.

One method uses a heavy-coverage ultraviolet-sensitive ink (varnish). A layer of ink is applied to the area on the ticket to be covered, then it passes through a UV curing stage. This is repeated several times to make a suitably thick coating. The varnish is designed to cure somewhat soft, so that it can be removed by scratching. This process is performed at the production speed of a multi-colour printing press - thousands per minute.

When some form of pattern or variety of colour is desired, a thin layer of foil is used instead. The foil hides the ticket contents somewhat better than the varnish, but is more
