Silvia Soler-Espinosa downs Lesia Tsurenko to each main draw – Internazionali BNL D’Italia 2012
Qualifying fourth seed, Silvia Soler-Espinosa, tumbled over the Ukrainian starlet, Lesia Tsurenko, in straight sets at the qualifying competition of Internazionali BNL D’Italia on Sunday. She manipulated a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the world number 109 to
progress into the main draw at this red clay court event which is part of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour 2012.
Soler-Espinosa got the better of the 22-year-old after outshining in this one hour and 56-minute epic. Encountering each other for the first time, the Spaniard comfortably advanced in the main draw at this Premier Mandatory event taking place in Rome, Italy.
The 24-year-old made a strong start at Foro Italico and jumped to a 2-0 lead with a break of serve. Despite losing her edge in the very next game, the Spaniard broke her opponent’s serve again in the sixth game and extended her lead to 4-2. Soler-Espinosa
failed to keep her lead in the seventh game but pocketed the last two games to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 60th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Soler-Espinosa let her spark lit in the second set and earned the coveted break in the opening game to get the upper hand again. Apart from levelling the scores at 2-2, the Spaniard took advantage of two
more break opportunities and sealed the set by winning six games to three.
Overall, the 24-year-old sought 16 break opportunities and brushed off nine out of 12 breakpoints she came across. She spilled an equal amount of seven double faults as compared to the Ukrainian and clobbered a slightly lower first serve share. However,
the Spaniard impressively availed 26 out of 43 points on it and finished the match with 91 points.
Next challenge for the blooming Spaniard is the local wild card entrant, Alberta Brianti, in the first round.
The qualifying sixth seed, Pauline Parmentier, faced a brutal fate later that day. She was edged out by the Belarusian challenger, Olga Govortsova, with a breadstick The French lost her serve twice in both sets to suffer a 2-6, 1-6 loss in their second encounter.
