Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia highlights Tour's credibility
The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour appears to be doing well to promote women’s golf across the globe—and the key to success is the introduction of a string of new tournaments
over the past two years.
The Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, which is set to kick off this week at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, Malaysia, is one such example to gain insight into how the Tour has risen to the occasion
in the recent past, having unveiled the plethora of new tournaments.
The LPGA’s plan appears to be working as women’s golf has now navigated its way into countries outside the United States and Europe like Japan, Thailand, China, Malaysia, South Korea and India.
Much of the credit of this success goes to Commissioner Mike Whan who has made an all-out effort to expand the sport outside the United States and Europe, opening the way for a much-needed
transition that has seen young Asian golfers rise to the top lately.
The list of new LPGA tournaments appears to keep growing by the year, but there are some tournaments that have attracted big stars since their launch.
In addition to the upcoming Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, the Tour officials introduced the Sybase Match Play Championship in the 2010 season.
The Sybase Match Play Championship has been held at Hamilton Farm Golf Club, Gladstone, New Jersey, United States, since its inaugural edition that saw South Korean Sun Young Yoo clinch a
victory.
The Sime Darby has also done well in terms of attracting audience and media attention. Moreover, players have also taken keen interest in playing at the four-round event, highlighting its
prestige.
LPGA Director of Tournament Business Affairs, Sean Pyun, spoke to media amid hype of Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 that the upcoming battle is set to ramp up the Tour’s campaign, which is
to give golf-crazy fans maximum excitement, and it will boost the image of sport in the region.
“The very best golfers in the world are here to showcase their skills and I'm confident the spectators will be in for a treat this week. This is certainly the strongest field assembled for
this fantastic event and there will be plenty of exciting action in store for all golf fans,” Pyun said.
