Simenon set to win Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup (British Champions Series) (Group 2)
By sealing two grand victories during the high-profile Royal Ascot event of June 2012, the legendary trainer W. P. Mullins’ bay gelding, Simenon, gained immense confidence. Today is the time when the five-year-old veteran horse has to utilise that confidence
to claim the ace title of the Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup (British Champions Series) (Group 2) that is set to take place at York racecourse.
In the class 1 contest over 2 miles and 88 yards, the experienced runner has to face ten worthy rivals with his eyes on £79,394. Traditionally, he is expected to run nicely on the good ground.
Simenon has won 6 of his total 24 starts so far. Since the beginning of 2012, he has been at the top of his game. After winning the McCarthy Insurance Group 60th Maiden Hurdle at Cork on January 2, he stood first elegantly in the Friday Evening Racing Hurdle
at the same venue on May 25.
Then there came the Royal Ascot festival that the enthusiastic gelding enjoyed a lot. On June 19, the son of Marju out of Epistoliere triggered a huge upset by winning the 20-runner event of the Ascot Stakes (Handicap). That was greatly impressive and awesome.
Considering that excellent performance, the punters regarded the Mullins’ star horse as the hot favourite candidate for the Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions Race). Simenon nicely justified his talent by winning that race with the mammoth margin of 7 lengths.
Those were the best feats in the gelding’s career. Afterwards, the Max Morris bred horse ran just one race but could not be able to do well in it.
Now, Simenon is geared up to make a big mark in today’s marathon. Though he has all the chances to thrive but he will have to be wary of Cavalryman who is on the verge of a hat-trick at the moment.
The Saeed Bin Suroor trained bay horse marvellously won Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup (Listed Race) on May 26 and Coral Marathon (Registered As The Esher Stakes) (Listed Race) on July 7.
In this scenario, an awe-inspiring clash is expected today. The spectators will derive a lot of fun from the live action.
