Similar questions being raised for Rory McIlroy
It has been a successful comeback year for Tiger Woods. Despite not being able to win a major, the former top ranked player managed to win three PGA Tour titles.
Other than that, he was in contention at almost all the majors. At the US Open, Tiger Woods was leading the field after 36-holes but could not carry forward his momentum in the final rounds.
On the other hand, Rory McIlroy has had a terrific season. He has won tour money lists on both sides of the Atlantic.
Moreover, he won the PGA Championship. The world number one has won five titles this year and has been named as the PGA Tour player of the year.
Rory has achieved more than he could have imagined at the tender age of 23. However, will he match the likes of Tiger Woods is yet to be seen.
Pundits are asking similar questions that were once raised during Tiger’s rise to the golf summit.
The question is not regarding whether Rory can continue to win more titles or majors. Instead, it is whether he can move a step ahead and separate himself from his rivals or not.
When Tiger was at his peak, he absolutely dazzled everyone on the field. He set a bench mark, which till now, has not been reached by anybody, including Rory McIlroy.
When Rory was asked about his future plans, he said that all he wants to do is win more trophies.
"I guess the same," McIlroy said. "To be focused on the majors, try to win more of those. I've won one in `11, one in `12. It would be nice to keep that run going next year".
McIlroy still feels that he needs to improve on some areas before the start of the next season.
"I feel like I can improve in different areas of the game still," McIlroy said. "I guess that's the challenge and the fun of practice is trying to get better all the time".
If the Irishman is able to win a major next year, he will match the likes of Woods, Watson, Palmer and Nicklaus to win a major in three successive majors.
Rory’s 2012 season can be compared with Tiger’s 1999 but the real test for Rory starts now, as he aims to maintain his dominance in the world of golf.
