im going to be a senior this upcoming year, and i dont know what i want to do with my life. i know i want to study mathematics of some sort, but thats about it. as for careers, i know nothing. as for colleges, i have an idea, but i need help.

i was looking at the Harvey Mudd College's website and i was really liking what i saw. on the down side, its in claremont, california, and i live in crown point, indiana. i dont really want to go that far away for college. on the other hand, thats the type of college i want to go to. i want to go to a college that focuses on mathematics.

do any of you know of a college that is very similar to Harvey Mudd College?? any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

thank you!!

p.s. please let me know of ANY college that is similar, even if it is still a long distance from home. thanks again.

  1. Ah! This question is clearer than your last. I think I understand a bit better.

Colleges with a major focus on tech/science/math, and which are really well respected, include: Olin College of Engineering (MA - although I think they may just be engineering, please check), The Cooper Union (NY and again, may just be engineering), Rose Hulman Institute of Tech (IN), Rensselaer Polytechnic (NY - and one of my personal favorites), Worcester Polytechnic (MA), Kettering U (MI), Cal Poly San Louis Obispo (CA), California Institute of Tech, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Cal State Poly Pomona, MIT, California Institute of Tech, and Georgia Institute of Tech.

If you'd also consider broader universities that really have the feel of a tech school, and that a lot of people consider to be tech schools, then consider U Cal Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, Rice, Drexel, Northeastern, Rochester Institute of Technology, and perhaps Cornell.

And if you really like Harvey Mudd, but it's just too far away, you may also like Carnegie Mellon and Rensellaer Polytechnic. I also really like Olin College for you re: the feel of the place, but I do think it's just engineering. Too bad, because it and the Cooper Union are tuition free if you can get in.

  2. Mudd is a very unusual college. People who apply there also apply to MIT and Cal Tech. Going to a new part of the Country for college can be a great experience and Harvey Mudd is located in  beautiful place.

  3. Rose Hulman in Indiana is similar in that it is a top ranked undergraduate college that focuses on science and engineering.  They frequently tie Harvey Mudd as the top undergraduate only engineering school.

    Edit:

Since you said in another post that you are interested in statistics and business applications, you might look into the financial math programs at the University of Chicago and Carneigie Mellon.  Both of those schools are much larger than Harvey Mudd though.
