    Similarities:  both cartilage and bone have relatively few cells, with much intercellular matrix, in which the cells become embedded.  Fibrous and ground-substance components (collagen and acid mucopolysaccharides) are similar.

    Differences:  in bone, the matrix becomes mineralized to varying degrees with amorphous calcium phosphate and crystalline hydroxyapatite. Cartilage cells are isolated and do not communicate with one another; bone cells do, because cellular processes of the osteocytes extend through the canaliculi.  Bone tissue is quite vascular, while cartilage is not.
